Homeless Jesus Sculpture

Homeless JesusYou might have noticed a homeless person sleeping on a park bench on the grassy area between the entrance and exit of the church. It is Jesus. Sculptured by Timothy P. Schmalz, the bronze figure is shrouded in a blanket and the only indication that it is Jesus is the visible wounds on the feet. The sculpture is a beautiful and somewhat unsettling visual reminder that Jesus is not only found, loved, and served within the walls of our House of Prayer, the church, but we are called and sent to recognize, love, and serve Jesus in one another, particularly in the poor and marginalized. We enter the church to pray, and we leave to serve. May the homeless, faceless, man on the bench inspire us to recognize Jesus in His many disguises and to serve Him, for He tells us, “whatever you did [or did not do] for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did [or did not do] for me.” (Matthew 25: 40,45)
