The key to understanding the meaning of Lent is simple: Baptism. The season of Lent has its origins in the Baptismal catechumenate, and is the time when we look closely at our lives, just as the Catechumens are doing, to see where we need to change in order to draw closer to God and to others. The Church gives us three “pillars” in which to focus to help support our Lenten journey and help us to focus on God and others: • Prayer • Fasting • Almsgiving
These pillars are found in Jesus’ “Sermon on the Mount” (Matt 6:1-18). They are meant to help us to be ready and available to center on Christ and on the needs of others, for we meet Christ when we reach out in service to others.
Every day in Orange County people of all walks of life encounter Christ and the Catholic through our outreach programs. Pope Francis tells us that “a church that does not go out of itself…sickens from the stale air of closed rooms”. PSA is a powerful way in which we go beyond our parish “rooms” and let the fresh air of Christian charity enliven the lives of others and our church. Beginning the weekend of February 22nd and 23rd each of us will have the opportunity to participate. Read more from Fr. Brendan Manson in English and Spanish.
